Real Madrid entered rarefied air on Saturday, winning a record-extending 36th La Liga title.

They can now also claim that no team in Europe's top 5 leagues has won more championships than them.

Sports Brief looks at the clubs that have won the most titles in the five biggest leagues in the European continent.

Most titles in Europe's top 5 leagues

Real Madrid (36 La Liga titles)

Real Madrid tied Juventus' record for the most titles in Europe's top 5 leagues, winning the Spanish La Liga 36 times in their storied history.

They first won the championship in the Spanish top flight in the 1931-32 campaign and successfully defended the title the following season (1932-33).

Real Madrid waited 21 years to win their third La Liga title, taking home the trophy in 1954. That started an unprecedented dominance, with Real winning 12 titles in 16 seasons, including five in a row in the 1960s.

Real Madrid matched that five-peat in the late 1980s, winning the championship from the 1985-86 season to the 1989-90 campaign.

They are starting to dominate the tournament again following Messi's departure from Barcelona, winning the title in three of the last five seasons, including the 2023-24 campaign.

Juventus (36 Serie A titles)

Juventus won 36 Serie A titles in their storied history, a record they now share with Real Madrid.

The Old Lady first won the championship in 1905 in a tournament known as Prima Categoria back then.

They started their dominance in the 1930s, winning five titles in a row from the 1930-31 season to the 1935-36 campaign.

They grabbed the record in the 2010s when they won nine consecutive Serie A titles from the 2011-12 season to the 2019-20 campaign.

Bayern Munich (33 Bundesliga titles)

When it comes to dominance in the German top flight, nothing will beat the reign of Bayern Munich.

They have won a record 33 Bundesliga titles, third-most in Europe's top five leagues.

A third of those Bundesliga titles came recently, with Bayern winning 11 consecutive league championships from the 2012-13 season to the 2022-23 campaign.

The Bavarian giants' bid to win 12 in a row was thwarted, though, by Bayer Leverkusen, who clinched the title with five matches remaining in their schedule.

Barcelona (27 La Liga titles)

The Catalan giants are ranked fourth on the list, winning 27 La Liga titles in their club's history.

Barcelona, who won the inaugural La Liga in 1929, dominated in the 1990s. They won six championships during that decade, including four in a row from 1991 to 1994.

The arrival of Lionel Messi made Barca the team to beat in Spain. The Argentine star won 10 La Liga titles during his stint there from 2004 to 2021.

They last won the championship in the 2022-23 season, their first since Messi departed the club.

Bellingham powers Real Madrid's title run

Sports Brief recently reported on Jude Bellingham being the driving force for Real Madrid in their La Liga conquest.

He leads the team in scoring in La Liga with 18 goals.

That was a surprise considering he only scored a total of 16 goals in his previous four league campaigns for Birmingham and Borussia Dortmund.
