The 63-year-old started his football career with Borussia Dortmund in 1978 before moving to VfB Stuttgart in 1986.

After close to 17 years in the Bundesliga, the former goalkeeper moved to the English topflight with Manchester City.

Immel went on to play for the Premier League side for two years between 1995 and 1997, making a total of 43 appearances.

After calling time on his playing career, the legendary goalkeeper transitioned into football management, coaching VfR Heilbronn for three years between 1998 and 2001.

Immel goes bankrupt

However, despite making a fortune from his career, SPORTbible reports that Immel has since gone bankrupt and has just £2 in his bank account.

The publication adds that his wife and his children deserted him after hitting a financial snag.

Speaking to Stat 1, Immel, who now lives in a flat in the town of Stadtallendorf said:

"I did things that any normal person would say can't be true. I hadn't given enough thought to the future. Dealing with money is not one of my strengths," he said.
"I now live on £972 a month in benefits. £491 of that goes on rent, leaving me with just £481 for other expenses. It is a real battle to make ends meet. Sometimes I just have £2 left," he added.
